Waringstown secure the Midweek trophy for the very first time
Aug 18th
Alan Harrison lifted the Midweek League trophy last night (Wednesday) after Waringstown ruthlessly defeated Muckamore by 58 runs to bring the title to the L
awn for the very first time. The opening spell from Adil Tahir and Alan Harrison ripped through the Muckamore top order who at one stage were 17-6 after 5 overs chasing Waringstown’s 106. Tahir (3-7) produced his finest display of the season bowling at pace and with a helpful deck he bowled the perfect line and length. Only for Tahir having work commitments at the weekend he most certainly could play at a much higher level. Harrison backed Tahir up with a nagging line and length and picked up 3-15. Waringstown’s fielding with exemplary with a superb diving catch from the agile Woods at point and with Harrison taking a one handed catch off his own bowling the village side put on a display fitting of senior cricket. McClimond (2-14) and Allen (2-3) finished off the Muckamore tail within 14 overs to start the celebrations.
Earlier Waringstown made a good start and with 66 on the board after 10 overs a score of over 130 was on the cards. Andrew Beattie made a run a ball 30 retired and at times made the pitch look like a fine batting track. He hit the ball cleanly and with a towering six sent the brand new ball into the local sub-station from where it never returned. He shared partnerships with Allen (14) and Hanna (15) but with wickets falling it was a Joe Lyons 20no off 16 balls which got Waringstown over the 100 mark. In hindsight, 106 was more than enough to win.
Credit must go to Cregagh CC for having their ground and facilities in excellent condition fitting of a final. Afterwards Skipper Harrison said”We played really good cricket as a team throughout the tournament and all players chipped in when required. Tonight was the high point of our season as I thought we played as well as we could have. I am delighted bring the trophy back to the Lawn for the very first time”.
