INJURY is to prevent South African all-rounder Obus Pienaar from returning to Waringstown for a second season.
Pienaar, who enjoyed a brilliant debut season at The Lawn in 2011, informed the club at the start of the week that he will be unable to fulfil his commitments for the coming summer.
A back problem ruled Pienaar out of the Knights’ most recent franchise game and further tests have concluded that the condition will require treatment and rest over the South African winter.
Pienaar said, “I was really looking forward to linking up with my Waringstown team-mates later this year, but unfortunately this is now not going to be possible. I will keep in touch with Waringstown and wish Kyle McCallan and the guys every success in the 2012 season.”
Waringstown skipper McCallan said the club understood that Pienaar’s long-term fitness had to come before his Waringstown commitments.
“Of course we are desperately disappointed that Obus will be unable to come back for a second season at The Lawn. His performances last season were among the best we have ever seen in club cricket in the NCU, and I’m sure he would have had just as big an impact in 2012. However, Obus has to look after the rest of his career. We will now start the search for an overseas professional for the 2012 season.”

WARINGSTOWN Cricket Club have announced a new two -year deal with the reputed sports clothing firm Kukri Sports.
Kukri will supply all of Waringstown’s kit over the next two years, with the villagers seen as the firm’s flagship cricket team in Ireland.
Waringstown captain Kyle McCallan said it was a hugely significant deal for the current Bob Kerr Irish Cup and Ulster Bank Challenge Cup holders.
He said, “This deal with a firm like Kukri is a fabulous recognition of what a great year the club had in 2011. It’s not just recognition of what the first eleven did, but Kukri see Waringstown as their flagship club because of what we achieved at all levels of the club, from top to bottom. It’s recognition of the hard work everyone put in last year.”
McCallan admits the likely presence of South African professional Obus Pienaar would be a key selling point for the villagers next season.

Kyle McCallan with Terry Jackson (Kukri) (Photo - Lurgan Mail)

He added, “Everyone is looking forward to Obus coming back in 2012, there will be just as much interest in him as there was last season. When you add Obus to the team that won the Challenge Cup and Irish Cup in his absence you realise that no-one will be particularly looking forward to playing Waringstown.”
Kukri proprietor Terry Jackson said Waringstown’s prospensity for developing young talent had been the key factor in continuing a long-standing relationship with the villagers.
“This is a continuation of the relationship we have had with Waringstown for a number of years, and we’ve had good PR from the successes of the club.
“It’s wonderful having a relationship with the likes of Ulster, Lancashire and Somerset, but 90 per cent of our business is centred on grassroots sport and nothing epitomises that more than Waringstown. Keeping our relationship going will hopefully help them to continue to bring through young players who will go on and make a big contribution to the game in Ireland.”

This publication should have the members at Waringstown CC digging deep in their pockets to support the efforts of Hiler. We at The Lawn have great pride and joy at the many successes Waringstown has had in the Senior Cup over the years, to have the games brought to life through this publication is a must read, and deserves our support.
The book is available for sale at the end of October. In addition to being a collector’s item for local cricket enthusiasts it could be a popular Christmas present for anyone who has any connection with the “Senior Cup” past or present”.
The book will be 552 pages in size and will cover every cup competition and details of every match. Each season has been chronicled from start to finish with abbreviated scorecards for each round and the complete cup final scorecard. Almost every year includes a cup-winning team photograph and in addition, some excellent material has been unearthed from tedious research in local newspapers. The book is a study of a unique competition that has been the heartbeat of the development of NCU cricket and it embraces everyone and anyone who played a part in this fascinating story.

The cost of the book will be 20 pounds (Post and Packaging will be charged extra).
The book will only be available through Waringstown Cricket Club and will not be retailed through newsagents.
This is a one-off publication with a serious historical content and the book will be a limited issue of 500 copies. So place your order now to avoid disappointment.

We are holding a practice for models in the Roy Harrison Pavilion on Thursday, 29 September 2011 at 7.30 pm. It would be appreciated if as many models as are able attend this practice to hear the music and familiarise themselves with the running order of the show. Models are to meet at the Church of Ireland Hall, Mill Hill on Friday, 30 September 2011 at 6.00pm sharp for a short practice on the catwalk prior to the show.

Members and players who have outstanding money and stubbs for the Raffle are requested to bring this to the Pavilion on Thursday evening at 7.00 pm. It is most important that raffle stubbs for tickets sold are returned to the Committee and entered into the Prize Draw. Money for show tickets can also be brought to the Pavilion at 7.00 pm on Thursday, 29 September 2011.

Thanks for your assistance and we hope to see you all on Thursday!
