5th XI Match Reports
5ths Cruise to comfortable win
Waringstown 5’s started their league campaign with a comprehensive 92 Run victory over the newly re-formed Cliftonville 3rds side at the Lawn.
Winning the Toss skipper Rab McClimond, decided to have a bat in the near perfect conditions, this decision almost back fired as McClimond was inexplicably dropped by the wicketkeeper in the 3rd over while still on nought. McClimond duly made Clitonville pay for this mistake as he went on to compile a very assured 55 ably supported by first Ryan Calvert and then Alan Harrison(19). When McClimond was finally out in the 22 over it was left to two up and coming stars to finish the innings in some style. Sam Wilson (22) and Matthew Hurst (27No) showed an example of the sort of talent Waringstown possess. A late onslaught by Marc Woods (11No) brought the total in 30 overs to 179-5.
As Cliftonville set about the run chase McClimond turned to more of his young guns. Stepahn Heyburn (1-26) and James Mitchell (2-25) who both bowled superbly in their 5 over spells, both were unlucky not to have at least another couple of wickets each as they caused the Cliftonville batsmen endless problems. They were aided by a superb all round fielding display summed up by a incredible one handed catch by the skipper off Mitchell’s bowling. The openers were ably backed up by seasoned campaigner Paul wilson (1-10) and Adam Dennison (1-16) who showed what a talent he is as he swung the ball both directions, at times bamboozling the Cliftonville batsmen. It was left to Ryan Calvert to mop up the tail as he finished with figures of 2-4 to close the innings and help Waringstown to a hugely impressive 92 Run victory. No mean achievement given that 5 of the squad are still available to play for the under 13’s and certainly bodes well for the rest of the season.
Special thanks must go out to everyone who gave up their Sunday to come along and support us, as it was really appreciated.
