Waringstown players Adam Dennison, Matthew Hurst and Craig Kennedy have secured 3 of the 13 places in the Irish Under 13 Squad that will play in England in August.

The selections are just reward for the boys consistent performances at club and provincial level during the recent Inter – Pro Series, in Cork.

In the two matches completed against North West and Munster (the Leinster match was washed out) the boys were top performers in the NCU team.

Adam, who captained the NCU side with great composure, scored 25 against NW and battled with determination and skill for a match winning 57no along with his 3 for 8 against Munster. His fielding throughout the tournament was excellent culminating in two run outs in the final match.

Matthew scored 38 against NW and contributed to a solid stabilising partnership with Adam after a poor start in the Munster fixture. He took wickets in both matches with 2 for 10 off 6 being the better return. His fielding against Munster was of the highest standard with two superb catches that helped remove the opposition dangermen.

Behind the stumps, Craig put in a very tidy performance against NW on a difficult wicket and he looked assured when batting scoring six confident boundaries in a score of 30. Against Munster he assisted his bowlers and fielders fully with a catch, 3 stumpings and completion of 2 run outs.

The boys will now be looking forward to their forthcoming tour to England in August, and we wish them continued success.

Local schools enjoy the sun and craic at The Lawn

The Lawn was the place to be on Wed., June 16th as Year 8 boys from five ‘reasonably’ local post-primary schools enjoyed great weather and an excellent day’s cricket competing for the Waringstown CC T10 Trophy. This was the second year of what looks like becoming an annual event – keenly anticipated by pupils and staff alike (but maybe for slightly different reasons?)

The concept behind the event is to provide an opportunity for teams to play enjoyable and ‘competitive’ matches in a shortened format that also allows those with limited cricket experience to get involved and “feel the excitement”.

Shaping up for a cut shot.

Banbridge Academy, Royal School Armagh, Royal School Dungannon, Killicomaine Junior High and Lurgan Junior High competed against one another and the searing heat as eight matches were played between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm. Some excellent cricketing talent was on display and for good measure the boys were able to make use of the extensive net facilities and some on site coaching to help hone their skills.

This year Lurgan Junior High School and Banbridge Academy (last year’s winners) entered the final match undefeated – and in what was essentially a ‘playoff’ the Lurgan boys came out on top.

The day was rounded off with a barbecue and the presentation of the ‘T10 Trophy’.

As the players departed one young lad was overheard saying “I wish every schoolday was like this!”  We can’t guarantee that but we hope the memories will last a long time.
