Our men’s first eleven rounded off a memorable season on Saturday with a thumping victory over Muckamore at The Lawn ahead of lifting the NCU Mercury Premier League trophy.
The nine-wicket triumph over the Moylena side completed a league campaign in which Greg Thompson’s side lost just twice, and both of those games were heavily influenced by the weather.
With the league title already secured with the win at Lisburn a week previously, both teams effectively had nothing to play for.
After losing early wickets, Muckamore were well placed at 142 for five batting first, with Jason van Der Merwe top scoring with 73, but they collapsed spectacularly, losing their last five wickets for just four runs in less than four overs.
James Cameron-Dow was the key architect of their downfall, claiming superb figures of 5-19 in his 7.4 overs. Graham Hume took 2-17 and there were also wickets for Tom Mayes, Ross Allen and Thompson.
Muckamore’s total of 146 was never going to present a serious test to Waringstown’s powerful batting line-up and it was fitting that Adam Dennison and James McCollum, who have been consistently among the runs for most of the season, who sealed the victory with an undefeated second-wicket partnership.
Adam continued his excellent end of season form with an unbeaten 51 which included five fours and two sixes. James batted majestically yet again, crashing 10 fours and two sixes, one of which sealed the victory, in his 69 not out from just 56 balls.
Waringstown finished their 175th anniversary season with the league title in the bag. They came mighty close to a double, only losing a classic T20 final to Lisburn by the barest of margins and while they might have wanted more than one trophy, the league title was a fitting reward for their consistency.
