Our first eleven are league champions for the 33rd time after sealing the Mercury NCU Premier League title with a massive 248-run victory over Lisburn at Wallace Park on Saturday.
Greg Thompson’s men secured a second league title in three seasons, after rattling up Waringstown’s highest-ever total in a 50-over game.
A stunning century from George Thomas, the English batsman making his debut for the club, and brilliant contributions from Adam Dennison, James McCollum and Morgan Topping, helped Waringstown reach 428 for five on a belting Wallace Park pitch.
Lisburn were admittedly well short of full strength due to a combination of international call-ups and injuries, but that shouldn’t detract from a remarkable batting performance led by Thomas, who cracked 131 from just 86 balls, including 11 fours and 10 sixes.
He and Dennison piled up an opening stand of 185 in just 24.4 overs, with Adam making 63 from 74 balls.
James McCollum (71 from 58 balls) and Morgan Topping (95 from 59) took up the mantle, with Morgan seemingly certain to reach three figures until he was unselfishly out, caught at deep mid-wicket, trying to hit another six. He had struck seven fours and six sixes.
Lisburn’s reply did get off to a flier, but once Thompson made the breakthrough, their challenge soon subsided as Waringstown’s spinners exploited a pitch that offered more turn as the day went on.
Thompson took 4-40 against his old club, and James Cameron-Dow 4-39, while Ross Allen claimed 1-30.
Tom Mayes took the final wicket by bowling Stuart Lightbody and ensuring the league trophy returns to The Lawn in the club’s 175th anniversary year.
